Tornado Damage At Chivington Friends Church at Chivington Colorado

“The Friends Church Parsonage lost a big part of the south end of the building. The church lost all of the south facing windows including the basement. They got all of the windows covered for the time being. The sanctuary was hardest hit as the wind tore the doors from their hinges and caused parts of the ceiling to collapse in a couple places and took the insulation and liberally distributed it throughout the whole main floor. The basement was in the best shape so Galan (pastor of Chivington Friends and Lamar Friends Churches) and some members of the church cleaned the basement and covered the windows that were blown out and that is where  they will have church Sunday. There is a possibility that the church was slightly moved on its foundation. If this is found to be true, the building may have to be raised and rebuilt? The insurance company will be looking at the building soon(?) we hope and determining the extent of damage. Please pray that the congregation stays strong and for a timely response from the insurance company. The FDS intends to help when we find out what is needed.”

Rocky Mountain Friends Disaster Service is looking for a licensed electrician to reconnect the power for the church as it was ripped off the building along with the fuse box. If you are interested in helping with any of the repairs and cleanup at Chivington.

February Disaster Service Work Week

Well, the February work week was blessed. Much was accomplished because God provided a Methodist group from Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to help. The house is all dried in. We were to have a youth group join us in March to paint, but their plans fell through. They will not be coming, so we are putting out the word again for volunteers to help paint. We are so close to finishing the house, please check your schedules and see if you can help. We are working March 19-24. Let me know if you can help.

February Disaster Service Planned Trip

Friends Disaster Service-Texas Area is expecting a group in from Colorado to work the week of Feb. 20-24 (note: date changed from 14-19 to 20-24). We will, hopefully, be sheet rocking the interior of the house. We are wondering who else will be available to work that week. Yes, there is still work to be done. We will take help from one day to the entire week, whatever is convenient for you. Let us know if you can help.

Blessings from God as you strive to serve Him. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Buildings for Haiti Update

Dear Friends,

I just wanted to send out an update on the Homes for Haiti project. Although Tom could not attend the last trip to Haiti because of his knee replacement surgery, we do have word on the homes. They were release from customs and are now being assembled. Matt, who is coordinator for C.O.R.E., went to Haiti to teach locals how to assemble the homes. They did not weather well sitting at the dock and while being held in customs, so they have had to come up with another way of shipping. The Lutherans are assuming the responsibility of shipping the remaining homes to Haiti, which is a blessing. There has been an understanding with customs in Haiti, so there will not be the problems with the next 225 homes that will be shipped. The work at the warehouse in League City will continue until the last of the homes that were started are completed and then the project will end.

The people of Haiti were thrilled with the homes and will live in them until permanent housing is available. So know that what you gave to the project is in the process of coming to completion and the people of Haiti are blessed.

Check out the following site to see the first pictures of the homes in Haiti. Haiti Trip Slide show

Don’t forget to check out the FDS website for updates regularly. We will have the pictures posted from Tom’s trip in June soon.

May the Lord continue to bless you for your faithfulness to His ministry through Friends Disaster Service.

 In Christ’s service,

Temporary Buildings for Haiti (8' x 12') are being built in Colorado By Core-Alliance

Core-Alliance is also building these shelters in Myrtle Beach, Houston and in Littleton Colorado. Their goal is to build 10,000 shelters that equal  4walls a floor and roof . Then stack, band the components for each unit together, and ship them to Haiti.  They plan to train and pay the Haiti people to assemble them on site. There are approx . 1000 units on their way to Haiti that will be put up in mid May.

The Littleton Core -Alliance is being run by Russell Burton and the site where the shelters are being built is at Russell’s  House with a 6,000 SF Shop and 4 acres. They will be working every Saturday except May 15 , until the end of June , or until the money runs out. As the rainy season comes on there will be a dire need for more substantial housing than card board and sheets.

The directions to the Burtons house is as follows : coming from Denver go south on I25 to the exit for Santa Fe Drive continue south  past C 470 for approximately  4 miles Just before the Titan Road overpass  there will be an electronic road sign that tells you to use Lake side Circle  to get to Chatfield  Drive take a left before Titan on to Lakeside Circle  then  right on Chatfield Drive go approximately 1 mile then left into the yard (there will be a sign about housing  for Haiti) . The address is 10360 Chatfield  Drive. Mr. Burtons phone  number is 303-358-8838

Haiti Emergency Relief

In Haiti we have about a dozen Evangelical Friends Churches  under the  direction of Evangelical Friends Church-Eastern Region with 2000-2500 attendees.  They are located 30 miles northwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  Many in these hills will be unlikely to get aid from other sources anytime soon, according to John Williams, Eastern Region Superintendent.

John Williams reported on Wednesday morning (1-13) that with the break-down in phone communication they had not yet reached William Bertrand, our Friends leader in Haiti.  He asks all of us to pray for contact to be established soon, and for our Friends families and churches who may be affected.

Emergency funds are greatly needed in Haiti.  All that you send through EFM will be forwarded to Eastern Region who directly supervise the Friends Churches.  Please clearly mark your check "Haiti-relief only" or "Haiti-where needed most."  We recommend "where needed most" which gives the freedom to help the missionaries and their ministries, too.  Send your gift to EFM, P.O. Box 525, Arvada, CO 80001.

We encourage all our Friends churches to take an offering this Sunday for Haiti
.

From a heart that cares,
Chuck Mylander
EFM Director

Greensburg July (Rebuilding begins)
Well it was not as busy as last year, but we still had lots to do. This year is shaping up to be potentially the busiest of all. With the Tornado that hit Greensburg and then the next night that touched down north of Haviland. There was a tornado that went through Windsor Colorado this spring and the damage was considerable. I have met with the  group that is responsible for rebuilding this community and will continue to attend their meetings.

July 16th-28th Greensburg Kansas
I went to work in Greensburg with the Texas and Mid America FDS groups to work on two different house projects. We rehabbed a house that had been damaged badly and build one from the foundation up. the first week I supervised a group of Catholic kids (high school and college age) and also repair a couple walls that had been demolished during the tornado. The bigger group (about 30 ) Were rebuilding the John Unruh House from the ground up. Bill  Edwards (Cooter) was over seeing this project. Friday at Noon we were down to 6 of us and at lunch we were sitting there and talking about how the roof was going to get felted and shingled as every one but me was leaving early the next morning. About then a young man by the name of James Bond showed up. He said he had 30 young adults that needed something to do before they left Sunday morning. Thank you Lord. We said come on over. They helped us finish the sheeting and most of the felt by dark Friday. The next morning I supervised about twenty of this new group and we worked until 8:00 PM and finished the roof minus one bundle of cap shingles). Monday I was by myself and went to Wichita to pick up cap shingles and electrical supplies. The rest of the week I ran 1300 feet of romex to the lights and plugs in the house. Mr. Unruh who is 80 yrs. old was very thankful for our effort.

Holly Colorado
Within days of the tornado that wiped out 70 homes in Holly Co. I was in touch with a lady in that area who was  running the relief response. They had a tremendous response from the surrounding towns and the agriculture  community that they did not need any help immediately. I told her that after things got further along that there probably be those that would have unmet need and to give me a call. In July she did e-mail me and wondered if we could come help a couple of individuals that needed repairs on a roof. I could not get away at that time and I had no luck finding anyone that could go.

Lafitte Louisiana
Peggy Bopp to Lafitte Louisiana to cook for a large group organized by Eastern Region and Texas area FDS January 20th to February 3rd.

Haviland Kansas
Peggy Bopp and Elena Millican for a week in Greensburg and Haviland Kansas organized by the Kansas and Texas FDS. Kirk Miller to Greensburg and Haviland May 17th to the 23rd.
